The Shark is Broken is a behind-the-scenes comedy that dives into the turbulent filming of the 1975 blockbuster Jaws. Written by Ian Shaw (son of Robert Shaw) and Joseph Nixon, the play is set aboard the boat Orca in 1974, where actors Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider are stranded due to repeated malfunctions of the mechanical shark, “Bruce”.
As filming stalls, tensions rise. The trio—each with clashing personalities—grapple with boredom, egos, and personal demons. Shaw, the seasoned but troubled veteran, clashes with the young and ambitious Dreyfuss, while Scheider tries to keep the peace. Over the course of the play, fueled by alcohol and frustration, they share stories, argue, and reflect on fame, art, and the absurdity of their situation.
Blending humor with poignancy, the play culminates in a powerful reenactment of Shaw’s iconic USS Indianapolis monologue, offering a glimpse into the emotional depth behind the chaos of movie magic.
